“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12

Whether you can get away for time out in Creation or you can protect some time to daily study the Bible in the quiet of your own home, I want to encourage you with a simple Bible study John and I have had to help experience God through fresh and regular intake of God’s Word.

(V) Verse:

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

(I) Inspect:

  • Who – Jesus, people in the temple, a woman accused of adultery, and the woman’s accusers, the scribes and the Pharisees.
  • What – The light of the world, the light of life.
  • Where – In the temple in Jerusalem
  • When – After Jesus fed 5,000
    • After he delivers the woman caught in adultery from the consequences of her sin
    • Before the crucifixion
  • How – Jesus spoke to them
  • Why – To tell the people that He is the light of the world

(S) Seek to Understand:

In this moment in time the people in the temple were unsure of Jesus’ divine identity. In the moments leading up to this passage we see Him delivering a woman from judgement.

Jesus proclaims that He is the light of the world and all that follow will have the light of life and no longer walk in ignorance of divine things and it’s associated wickedness.

Jesus then proclaims who He is and what it means to follow Him. He is the light of the world and those who walk with Him as His disciples shall no longer walk in ignorance if divine things and the consequences of wickedness, but will have life abundantly.

(A) Application

How does this knowledge apply to your life?

This knowledge applies in that it drives home the fact that Jesus is the light of the world. In knowing that light, we also know of darkness. When measured against the Word the world is no longer subjective. It is absolute. Jesus dispels ignorance of divine and wicked things

What will you change in light of these scripture?

Personally, I’ll pour into the Word, because God is in His Word. In knowing the Word, we know God. In knowing God, we are able to better discern the roads that lead to life and those that lead to death.
